Authorities in Almaty have launched a large-scale project to modernize street lighting. A budget of 10 billion tenge has been allocated for installing new lights and repairing old ones. The plan includes illuminating not only major roads but also courtyards, pedestrian areas, and parks to make the city safer and more comfortable for residents.

Special attention will be given to energy efficiency: the new lights will consume less electricity and have a significantly longer lifespan. Work is already underway, and residents will soon see the first results.

Growth in Energy Consumption:

• Over the past five years, total energy consumption in the country has increased by 12%. The most noticeable growth was in the residential sector (+33%) and industrial sector (+30%).

Reduction in Energy Intensity:

• Since 2008, the energy intensity of Kazakhstan's GDP has decreased by 21.6%, indicating improved energy efficiency in the economy.

• Between 2015 and 2022, industrial sector energy intensity was reduced by 39%, leading to savings of 105 billion tenge.

Government Initiatives:

• In 2022, legislative amendments were introduced to improve the state energy registry, the energy audit market, and budget sector monitoring. The concept of "energy-efficient government procurement" was introduced to enhance energy use efficiency in the public sector.

In 2025, Almaty is actively modernizing its street and park lighting. The project began in 2023 and has already surpassed last year’s volumes. The city is becoming brighter, safer, and more technologically advanced — with a focus on energy efficiency and local solutions.

🌃 What’s been done:

• Over 12,000 lighting points replaced
• 450 poles installed
• 110 km of cable laid

By the end of the year, another 15,000 lights, 5,700 poles, and 1,200 new lines are planned, which will ensure 100% street lighting coverage.

🛣️ Streets and sidewalks:

On main city streets:

• Over 3,000 lighting points updated
• Over 1,000 lanterns installed
• Yards and sidewalks are being lit with consideration for green spaces

• Complaints about lighting have dropped nearly 3 times

🎯 Goal:

By the end of 2025 — full lighting coverage of streets, parks, outskirts, and illumination of 70 architectural landmarks.

Almaty has unveiled its urban lighting master plan, set to completely transform the city’s appearance by the end of 2025. The project covers all streets, major transport routes, and public spaces, creating a unified system of exterior and architectural lighting that meets international standards of safety, energy efficiency, and visual perception.

The master plan is being developed using best practices from cities such as Moscow, London, Lyon, Seoul, and others. It includes:

• distribution of lighting across streets and public spaces;

• development of architectural and event lighting;

• reduction of light pollution;

• integration of exterior lighting into the “smart city” system;

• enhancing safety at night, especially for women, children, and people with reduced mobility.

According to Almaty Akim Darkhan Satybaldy, the project’s implementation will be under his personal supervision:

“Only by visiting the sites in the evening can one truly understand how lighting works for residents.”

By the end of 2025, all streets in Almaty will be illuminated, improving safety levels and revitalizing evening city life, creating favorable conditions for tourism, small businesses, and cultural events.

In preparation for the launch of an updated international exhibition project in a new format, the organizers have decided to reschedule the dates of Interlight Central Asia and Security&Building Central Asia.

The exhibitions were originally planned to take place in Astana on September 17–19, 2025. Based on recommendations from international partners and to ensure the most effective preparation, the exhibitions have been moved to September 9–11, 2026, and will be held in an updated, significantly larger format.

Interlight Central Asia traditionally brings together professionals in the fields of electrical engineering, decorative and technical lighting, as well as architects, designers, developers, and investors. The exhibition is well known not only for its showcase but also for its business program, which features design and smart technology days, B2B meetings, and workshops.

Security&Building Central Asia presents leading manufacturers and suppliers of security systems, building automation, and Smart solutions for “smart homes” and “smart cities.” The event highlights innovations in building management, video surveillance, and engineering systems.
